Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations

The Australian Youth Representative for the UN travelled around and went to Youth Street in Townsville. This is what she had to say about it.

YOUTH STREET

On Saturday night, I went to Youth Street, which is a community development project aimed at reaching young people, with 4 community centres – Townsville, Newcastle, Mount Isa and Perth. Youth Street is an initiative of Youth With A Mission, which is an international Christian organisation.

Seeing Youth Street in operation is truly phenomenal. It was without doubt the most packed out place I’d seen in all my travels, with dozens and dozens of young people using the skate ramps that surrounded the building before coming inside for bands, short films and hanging out.

Service delivery for young people is so tricky and the number of youth centres and PCYC’s that I’ve seen around the country that aren’t really being utilised by the young population is such a shame, particularly so when a lot of young people in these communities complain there is nothing to do. I think the key is involving young people in the building, development and running of these facilities, which is what Youth Street does.

I was shown around by Fiona Saxby and Ryan Booker, who are both young people in touch with the needs of the community they were servicing, and were involving young people in lots of team-building, fun activities and good old fashioned entertainment, using ideas like Skate Teams as ways to foster relationships amongst young people.

Good times

The team (7 adults and a child) from Darwin is here and I can only say that they are an amazing bunch...we don't want to let them leave again. Maybe you can pray that 1-2 will come back after their DTS (discipleship training school) ;-)

My schedule has become even fuller these days because of the team being here but it's great. That's the reason why you haven't heard from me these past weeks.
My personal highlight is going to Yallambee (the street, where only indigenous live) and where we play with the kids. You will hear more about in my next newsletter which is in its final stages. Yeah.

Youth Street was much more relaxed with the additonal Youth Street staff (aka DTS students). Without them it would have been pretty stressful.
Last Saturday, one of the girls of the DTS gave her testimony and asked if the youth wanted to invite Jesus into their hearts. She didn't plan it like that but God was leading her that way. Many responded and talked to the staff later.
Unfortunately, I don't really know what was going on because I was doing security in the building so that no stranger from the street would come inside and steal our stuff.
Now the challenge arises how to do the follow-up. Please pray for wisdom, strength and open doors for what we are planning.

Tonight there will be a band from Townsville arriving. They are going to stay for one week which means, there will be another busy week ahead of us. So, I'm still going to enjoy the rest of half free day.

Bevor die Teams kommen... / Before the teams are arriving...

Und last but not least, Lobpreis lief wesentlich besser letzten Sonntag! Also danke für eure Gebete.

********************************************
This week I can't complain about being bored. The last preparations are being done for the three teams that will be here for the coming 5 weeks to do their outreach. Maybe you can remember that one of my jobs consists of coordinating the team schedule.

So much of my time I spend with calling or emailing people to be sure that everything will go as previously mentioned. Sometimes it's communicating back and forth between team and locals.
Sometimes something changes last minute. I just hope that not too much is changing last minute because that was rather frustrating last time. Almost everyday I had to inform the team about changes which sometimes changed everything else.

Anyway, I hope the best. ;-)
Generally I like to have lots to do (at least this kind of work) with the same deadline- at least once in awhile. But then I hope I did a good job so that not so many things come up that I didn't pay attention to and that make things complicated. Don't know if that makes sense.

Besides that I have some good news: We have a car...well, Johannes has a car. After the youth street camp he spent some days in Townsville and bought a new car there (cheaper there) and drove back to Mt Isa with it on Monday (He had sold his old car a few weeks ago). It was great timing since Adam and I had to return the borrowed car on Sunday.

And *drum role please* we finally have internet at home. After two weeks of no internet to internet at the PCYC to finally having internet here, we notice what a blessing internet at home can be. I got so much done and some of the jobs that I need to get done don't seem like a huge mountain each week. It is also nice not to have 1000s of kids as a background noise when working (as we had it at the PCYC).

Last but not least, worship last Sunday was so much better than the week before. Thank you for your prayers. I'm still glad that those Sundays are over and done with though. But I'm pretty sure that it will not be the last time that I will lead worship :-)

Oh, and we finally signed our house contract and now we have two months time to get $20,000 for the down payment. So please keep on praying for willing Christians and business people who would support our ministry. Or pray for a win of the lottery without having a lottery ticket (well, that would be a miracle, wouldn't it?)

3.Oktober Update

So, we have only gotten text message updates from Johannes who is on the 5-day youth street camp. Wednesday night they gave an evangelistic message with an altar call and one of the two youth that went from Mt Isa responded. Praise the Lord!

I don’t know more right now but I’m sure that Johannes also had some more good conversations.

Some other good news: The internet at the PCYC is working again. Hallelujah, it’s a real blessing. Hopefully we will also get internet at home soon.

Running Youth Street last Saturday was really relaxt. Two members of my church were even willing to help out but at the end, only three youth showed up. Everyone else either seems to work during the school holidays (here, youth can already start working in stores at a pretty young age, 13 years of age I think) or went on vacation. With only three youth we didn’t really need help but it was actually quite nice to be in a little group like that for a change.

Some other good news: The outreach team from Townsville that spent a night at our house brought us a new vacuum cleaner from the Townsville base. The vacuum cleaner is much better than the one that we had before and our house looks clean again (even my room J)

Now we only need a new car. Meanwhile it has gotten pretty hot again (38°C) so that we are not really up for short or long walks during the day. There are only two days left that we can use the borrowed car that we drive now and then we have to return it. So prayers for a new car are very much appreciated.

Last but not least, the praise & worship service will be this Sunday that I’m leading. Fortunately this time it will be with the help of a drummer which will be a big help – at least with the fast songs. In my opinion something was missing last Sunday. I know that everything doesn’t depend on the drummer, so I’m especially praying that this Sunday, the Holy Spirit will take control and move in that time. It’s not by might not by power but by His Spirit!

Gute und schlechte Nachrichten / Good and bad news

Aber was passiert danach?

************************************************

Hello, to make it short: There are good and bad news.

The good ones first: Reef to Outback Mt Isa was subcontracted by the PCYC (the police youth club where we run Youth Street at) and if everything goes well, we will get a “salary”. We get money for what we are doing anyways. Of course the money doesn’t go to us personally but to our ministry. This is how we could also pay off some of the money for the house.

The coming days Youth Street Townsville and Youth Street Newcastle will go on a 5-day camp and two of our youth go along as well. Please pray for them that God will touch them.

There will be three outreach teams coming the next 2 months; that way we will be able to do so much more with all the staff we have then.

We will be able to use a projector for the next three weeks because its owner is going on his honeymoon. That’s a great blessing since we can use it for Youth Street that way. An extra bonus will be movie nights on big screen at home 

Now to the bad news:
Unfortunately, the internet at the PCYC hasn’t been running for more than two weeks so that I went desperately to the internet café today (I just need internet to get some things done).
We also had trouble getting internet at home since we don’t have an official job and Johannes (who applied) has to proof that he gets enough money per month to afford internet. I don’t know why but because of some reason we cannot get internet for the ministry.

Because of the youth street camp “5 DE” and a wedding in the US where Jill went to, there is only Adam and me here.

Fortunately, it’s also school break so we don’t have to go there but Youth Street might be a lot of work. This Saturday I will talk about “forgiveness”. Please keep us in your prayers, will you? I’d really appreciate it.

This weekend there will also be an outreach team staying at our house for a night on their way to Darwin. That means big cleaning day…normally not a big deal but unfortunately, our vacuum cleaner died.

Our car also died…it’s old and it’s a miracle that has been running as long as it has been running but we really need one. This coming week we will be able to use someone’s care who is on holidays (another praise report)

On top of that, it will also be the first time for me to lead worship at church. That’s not really bad news, it’s more of a fact. The bad thing about it is maybe the timing of it all. To lead out in singing is not really what I like to do in public. Unfortunately, also the guitar player (our pastor) and the drummer are both not there so I will play all by myself but there will be two female singers supporting me.

So, as you can see…busy weeks are ahead. I will try to keep you up to date.

Zu Besuch in Townsville / Visiting Townsville

Hallo!

Hello! Yesterday I flew to Townsville and I'll stay for a few days. The reason for my visit is to learn how to use the Youth Street database. The cool thing is that we got 6 flights sponsored by MacAir, the regional airline, so that I could fly for free. It makes a big difference if you only fly 2 hours compared to driving 10-11 hours.
It's nice to be back again and see some of my old friends and be back in the "city". It's also much greener here...

Hauskauf / house purchase

So, the plan is to purchase the house. We have 2 months to find out where to get the money from. By the way, next week I will got to Townsville for a few days if everything works. That's where I will learn how to use the new database for Youth Street. It's gonna be nice to catch up with old friends.
