So DTS will start this coming Sunday. Crazy. Yesterday the first student arrived and tomorrow morning heaps of them are coming. So, I will just let you know, what topics we will actually go through. We will have speakers to teach about the topics (besides orientation and debrief) so it's NOT us staff that will do that.

Ministry areas at Reef to Outback
Sometimes I wonder if people at home get a little confused when I start mentioning different ministry areas here at Reef to Outback. There is a lot going on at the same time but on the other hand, we are all interdependent in a way; that's how it is possible to be officially in one ministry area but still help out at another one when help is needed.
I guess it would be like being in the children's ministry but help out at the fellowship ministry when help is needed because they are both ministry areas of the church. Then on the other hand, it might be a bad example because of course it is possible to be in more than one ministry at church anyway.
But when I was in "Youth Ministries", I still helped out in "Campus Life and Events" when we didn't have a lot to do and when they really needed help. Makes sense?
Anyway, I added a organisational chart of Reef to Outback so that you can have an overview of what Reef to Outback consists of. Click on it to enlarge. The orange half is our base operation in Townsville where I live now while the white one belongs to Darwin. They both belong to Reef to Outback.
So far I have been involved in the ones that have a red line around them. "Community Outreach" (which oversees all the ones below) doesn't really count since I was only there for 3 days :-)
I hope this might help for the future when I mention different ministry areas.

Change of plans again
Now I explained so much in detail what Community Outreach looks like and then again there is a change of plans. Well, that's life at Reef to Outback. There is so much going on and things change from one day to the other. It's sometimes hard to keep track of everything. :-)
So, what's the change? I was asked if I could imagine staffing the coming October Discipleship Training School (DTS) since more girls have applied than expected and there were needing another female staff. After praying about it and consulting some of you guys at home, I felt that it was the right step to do.
This October DTS actually consists of 2 DTS with different focus - an injustice, media and youth one and an indigenous, dance, music & sports one. I will be part of the latter one even though both schools have lectures together.
I'm to lazy to write what this school is all about, that's why I'm just gonna paste what we have on our Reef to Outback webpage (www.reeftooutback.com) about it :-)
During the school we will focus on the Indigenous and Island cultures. We are creating a DTS where dance, music and sport are encouraged. Not only will hearts be challenged, but a platform will be created for these rich cultures to be expressed throughout the course as well as discipled during outreach. We want see young Indigenous Australians and Islanders released into missions.
At Reef to Outback we have a strong, vibrant, life-giving community and a live/learn environment which makes for an exciting time and a great atmosphere to learn about Jesus.
Coupled with dynamic lectures from a range of guest speakers, this is not your average classroom! We'll even spend a couple of weeks learning about God in the Aussie Bush!
We believe in impacting those that live closest to us, and also the nations. You will also spend nine weeks on outreach, taking what you have learned outside of the classroom sharing hope and life with communities throughout our region and into the islands.
If you have a heart to express yourself through culture or to minister and disciple Indigenous Australians and Islanders, we want you to join us!
As the Mt. Isa plans have already been postponed from October to January, this would mean I could either not go on outreach with the school or go again later to Mt. Isa. Both is possible as they especially needed me during the lecture phase to offer better one-on-one time with the students . This is important since the lecture phase is the time of learning - God just does a lot in the students.
On outreach you focus more on making God known and ideally, you put into practise what you have learnt during lecture phase.
The school will be split in half going on outreach and for each outreach team there will be 2 leaders. So I don't necessarily have to go along and we could really leave for Mt. Isa in January as this is what I have come back for.
On the other hand, outreach is great because you see God move and it's great to see how some rise above themselves during this time. I remember that from my own DTS. And of course, this time, being on staff, I would want to see how "my" students grow.
So, it's difficult. Would you pray with me and my leaders for what God wants me to do. Thank you!
P.S. By the way, I think it's good that you got another glimpse of what we do at Reef to Outback when I explained the ministry area "Community Outreach" to you. Keep "Stable on the Strand" and "Impact Summer" as the October DTS will definetely be a part of that.

Hier gibt´s eigentlich immer was zu Essen! :-)
Back to work
So, now I have started to work again. And right now I pretty much just help out where help is needed.
Of course I still help with Youth Street but at the moment I`m not in the department that helps preparing it. They are pretty stressed at the moment, preparing 5 DE, the youth retreat I`ve talked about in my previous letter. If they need help, I will also help them but at the moment I would probably be more of a burden than a help to them.
So instead I`m working with Anna again. Anna and I have already worked together in Mt. Isa when we prepared Impact World Tour. And more than half of the people (in the office that I sit in) are former Impact World Tour staff. So I feel pretty comfortable as you can imagine. The rest of the people in that office that are not former Impact Word Tour staff are my best friends. So it´s really the best office to get adjusted to Reef to Outback again. :-)
So, what do I do in the office now? I help with community outreach. This includes a lot of different things. I`m just gonna hit you with some terms that of course don´t mean anything to you but I will explain them below:
Mission Adventures
General Outreach
Stable on the Strand and Impact Summer
Voice for the Voiceless
Mission Adventures: YWAM trains youth group leaders and their youth group so that they can present the gospel across cultures. YWAM takes care of the logistics, food, accomodation and organises the mission outreach. The last mission adventures outreach went to Thailand to minister to kids in orphanages.
General Outreach: Every discipleship training school and every other school conducted by Reef to Outback goes eventually on outreach. We help organize that.
Stable on the Strand: Some of you might remember me talking about this. Stable on the Strand is a church-based event that takes place the week before Christmas. Ironically the beach in Townsville is called Strand (maybe a German named it) and that`s where each year the local churches put up not only a whole nativity scene but it´s more like ancient Bethlehem comes back to life again. You see camels, sheep, beggars, salesperson, Mary, Joseph. In the midth of it all, the story of Jesus being born is told.
Impact Summer goes along with Stable on the Strand. Youth from this region come to be impacted by God the first week through teaching, worship and small groups. Of course we also have a lot of fun together. The second week we have outreach to Stable on the Strand, helping out wherever help is needed (acting, cleaning up, selling, taking care of the animals) and to tell visitors about Jesus. Last year I was staff for this "camp" and it was amazing to see what God was doing in the youth life and through them.
Voice for the voiceless is something that we started supporting while I was away, that´s why I don´t know so much about it. I only know that it opens people´s eyes about the injustice in the world, especially for children and women, e.g. in Islamic countries but also about prostitution in Thailand. People and especially youth again are mobilised to pray for these children and women and donate to organisations that offer help to these people groups.
At the moment, my only task so far has been to find cheap flights for speakers and help update some of the outreach files that we have in the office. That was my first day.
Today I´ve been put on reception to take incoming calls and greet people who come and have either meetings with someone at the base or just stop by to get more information on what we do here. So we´ll see how the rest of the week is going to look like. Full of surprises.
